What is the value of x + y?

1) xy = 24
2) x/y = 8/3

OE is E.
This is from readyforgmat.com Advanced Quant.

Why E?

Any explanations are much appreciated.

Using both statements, x and y could be 8 and 3, or -8 and -3, so we can't find a single value for x+y. So the answer is E.
