Bawss Medical Supply Store sells Brand X rubbing alcohol and Brand Y saline solution. Excluding sales tax, what is the total cost for 1 gallon of Brand X rubbing alcohol and 1 quart of Brand Y saline solution? (4 quarts = 1 gallon.)

Excluding sales tax, the total cost for 8 gallons of Brand X alcohol and 12 quarts of Brand Y saline solution is $96. (There is no quantity discount.)
Excluding sales tax, the total cost for 8 gallons of Brand X alcohol and 2 gallons of Brand Y saline solution is $88. (There is no quantity discount.)

A Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

we need to get cost of 1 gallon of x and 1 quart of y
let X = 1 gallon of x
and Let Y = 1 quart of y

statement 1)
8X + 12Y = 96

cant solve for a unique value...

statement 2)
8X + 8Y = 88 .............. I got 8Y as 2 gallons is equal to 8 quarts... conversion given in the question..
hence X + Y = 11

which is what we want...
hence sufficient...

statement 2 : 8galonX+2 galon Y=88 or 4 galon X+1galon Y=44
how come you solve x+y=11?

once u get this... u can convert the x gallon Y into some number of quarts...
the question mentions the conversion ratio...
which is 1 gallon = 4 quarts...

Hence ur equation becomes 4 gallon X + 4 quart Y = 44

= 1 gallon X + 1 quart Y = 11

which is what we want...

The question asks for the cost of 1 gallon of x and 1/4 gallon of y.

(2) tells us the cost of 8x and 2y.

If you know the cost of 8x and 2y, you only need to divide by 8 to get to the cost of 1x and 1/4 of y.
