GPA dilemma

by jain_ashu » Sat Dec 29, 2007 10:12 am
I hope some people can help in resolving my dilemma over GPA.
I completed my B.E. from one of the top 10 Engineering colleges in India recently. However unlike other top Engineering colleges in the country our college calculated CGPA on absolute scale rather than relative scale.Which puts us into obvious disadvantage. So on that scale my GPA is 6.72/10 or 2.7/4.However if followed the percentage conversion method adopted in my college,it will be 73.2%((6.72*10)+6)and then my GPA on scale of 4 will be 2.93.However if calculated on relative scale, with the topper having CGPA of 8.1/10,I will have significantly higher GPA 3.3(without converting to percentage) or 3.55(on converting to percentage).
I would like to know which should be considered my actual GPA and in worst case scenario of GPA 2.7 how much does it affect my chances in getting into TOP 10 MBA schools in USA.
I sincerely hope to find an answer here.
Thanks.

Hi jain_ashu:

Just wanted to remind you that this is the holidays so I would expect responses to be a bit slower everywhere. :) An expert will respond.

Hi Jain,

I am not acquainted with the academic system in your particular case/ system, but rest assured that the admissions committees of the various business schools have been looking at and admitting Indian applicants for years. I certainly don't think that your 'lower GPA after converted' will be an issue, because they will be well-versed with the Indian grading system. Now, if your GPA is low by Indian standards, then that might be cause for concern. If it isn't, then you'll be fine.

Hi Jain,

Jelt is correct that MBA programs in the US are quite familiar with Indian applicants.

I would look at the website of your individual target schools to see how they want you to convert your GPA (or not). It really varies so we do not provide specific conversion advice.

Good luck!
