MGMAt Quest for 750

by wongee » Sun Dec 23, 2007 12:39 pm
I am back after a much needed break. I took the GMAT a month back and was extremely extremely dissapointed with my score - a mere 620. Totally disheartened I decided not to think about it for a while and therefore didnt log on to BTG much as well. I am sure people who dont get the score they want know the feeling - its really yuck...(pardon my language)

What went wrong:
I think DS is where I screwed up big time, While I have a good hold on quant (PS, etc), it is the integer type qtns that I didnt practice enough. In the atual exam i felt like every second qtn, or every qtn (maybe it was mind) was a the integer type qtn!! Did anyone feel this way? I did rememebr reading one other poster saying that interger type qtns come a lot.

Anyways, so I think my verbal was not that great either, scaled score Q 39 , V 35. I knew I had screwed up quant right after that section but decided to concetate on verbal...clearly I didnt achive it.

I didnt take too many test, but the ones I did take, i did decent, but due to lack of time, I picked a few. Some of the scores towards the end of prep were:

GMAT PREP : 720 and 690
PR: would be a range - I took three i think, 650-710

I would really like to acheive a 700 and honeslty think I do have the capability to do so. Also i am taking the exam while I am working so that was a bit tough. ANyways, to help me our I figured i'd take a course in DS, and looked at MGMAT course list. I have booked my exam agian for the end of this week, but saw this Quest for 750: Adv Data Sufficiency on their website. Now, I dont really need a 750, but I do want some other material that will help me further and that will fit within my budget. I know it is close to exam date and i should take it slow, but i think i need to get comfy with tough qtns should they arise.

SO, has anyone heard/taken this course?
- THe probalems will obviosuly be really tough (700-800( level)
Are these the level of difficulty that actually come on the test(asking this since many have posted here saying that MGMT math is tougher than actual GMAT test

It is only $250 or something liek that...but still want to know if it is even worth buying it. The other positive is you get the 6 practice tests with the purchase..so I think perhaps for that it is worth it?

Also, any other help in gearing ahead of 700...ie the fine line between 600 level test taker and 700 and what is the best material to do that?

Thanks, sorry by grammar/typing is all over the place, but am using a friends comp and just not comfortable with the keys.

ANy help will be greatly appreciated.

PS: This forum was amazing during my first prep and I hope to crack the test this time around...!!! THANKS ERIC and everyone else here...

Hi wongee:

Nice to see you back--I'm glad that you had taken a short break and that you now appear re-energized to beat this stupid test!

I am now familiar with the MGMAT quests myself, but I personally trust Manhattan GMAT's products and classes without question. One huge thing that you've already done for yourself is that you've pinpointed your primary area of weakness and are now trying to tailor your prep to improve upon it. This is a very smart strategy and should certainly help propel you to your target score.

Stacey will likely be commenting on this thread to provide some additional data regarding the Quest course. Remember, as a Beat The GMAT member you are entitled to a 10% member discount on all MGMAT products and courses.

Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Hi - we have 3 Quest for 750 workshops, 2 for math and one for SC. Some things you should know as you make your decision:

- Each class assumes you have already learned everything we teach in our regular courses. For example, one problem is an extremely difficult sequence problem. We do NOT teach sequences in the workshop - we assume you're already familiar with general sequences (including arithmetic, geometric, and recursive) and we only deal with what makes this problem a very difficult sequence problem.

- Generally, you need to be scoring at least at about the 80th percentile in the respective section (quant or verbal) in order to get the most you can out of the class. This is because you simply will not see these types of problems on the test unless you are scoring very well in the first place - you'll only see these problems if you're lifting yourself high enough to allow the algorithm to offer these to you.

- So, to answer another question of yours, yes, these problems are representative of very difficult problems in the test database, but you may not see them on your test if your performance is not strong enough to result in the algorithm offering you these very hard questions.

- Finally, be aware that the techniques taught in the quest classes will not be appropriate for most or even half of the questions on the test. They are appropriate for only a small subset of the most difficult problems - maybe only 3-6 questions in the entire section (again, assuming you perform well enough to be offered these types of problems). The idea is that answering these correctly rather than incorrectly can be the difference between a 700 and a 750 score (or a 680 and a 720) - but you've got to get yourself up to that lower boundary first.

Okay, now that I've cautioned you, I'll also say that my students who take the Quests (and who are really qualified to take them - that is, they are going to see questions of this type on the test b/c they're already strong on the sub-700 stuff) tell me they learned a ton of useful stuff for very hard questions.

Good luck! :)
