1) "continued on playing" is unidiomatic, A and D are out.
"Hoping that the return" would expect a outcome of the hope, so E is out.
"recurrent injuries" is more concise than "injured over and over" so C is out, B it is.

2) fewer pollutants is right, since pollutants is countable. But "certain pollutants" means the list of pollutants and therefore number of them is decided, so it should be less/more etc. So B and D are out.
We are comparing vehicles that use natural gas with other vehicles that burn gasoline, so "than those burning" is important, so E is right.
