Will my Quant Score hurt me (i.e. should I retake the GMAT?)

Greetings!

Anyone mind giving me any advice?

I scored a 750 this past weekend, which I was obviously very happy with. On practice tests that I had been taking, I was regularly scoring from 730 (manhattan) to 760. So the 750 was at the upper end of my range. However, I was typically scoring a Q-49-50 / V 41-44 on practice tests. When I took the GMAT, I scored a Q47 and a V47. My quant was much lower on a percentile basis (77%) than I had been hoping for.

Ceteris paribus, is this a cause for concern when applying to top-tier MBAs (HBS, Wharton, etc.)?

I have the same issue and had similar worries at first. I also scored a 47V/47Q, although my score was a 760. I had been scoring in the 90th percentile in Q prior to the test.

Here are my thoughts after thinking about the issue for a few weeks:

1) If you take the GMAT again, you look insane. Who scores a 750 then retakes it? Your priorities look completely off. Imagine if you score less than a 750 (clearly possible).

2) If you have the ability to show you are capable quantitatively in other ways, then you have no worries. Are you an Engineer? Did you get an A in Calculus? Can you work in a Quantitative-based example of you excelling in an essay?

3) If you do not have that ability, then you still have much greater priorities to focus on. You will not be rejected from any school BECAUSE of your GMAT score... far from it.

I am no expert, but perhaps one would like to weigh in. I guess we will both know soon enough, since I am in the process of submitting apps to HBS, Wharton, and Kellogg, and it sounds like you are applying to some top tiers as well.

My short answer for you is that Upright Citizen gave you great advice and that you should pat yourself on the back for your excellent score. Now commit yourself to writing outstanding essays.
