thanks, the OG mentions E too. But, I thought we could cross - multiply the quest(x-y)/(x+y)>1 and then x eventually cancels out. This means the value of y in st. 2 is suffcient and that's how I chose B.

Do you mean to say that we can not simplify the question the way I did?

When you cancel out x from each side, you get -y>y. This means y<0. So without even looking at b, you know y is negative. So B provides you with no new information. You already know a is not enough I assume.
Together a and b can give you different answers. Hence, E.
