Books sold

by JeetGulia » Sat Sep 11, 2010 5:25 am
Store S sold a total of 90 copies of a certain book during the seven days of last week, and it sold different numbers of copies on any two of the days. If for the seven days Store S sold the greatest number of copies on Saturday and 2nd largest on Friday, did store S sell more than 11 copies on friday?

A) Last week store S sold 8 copies of the book on thursday
B) Last week Store sold 38 copies of the book on Saturday

Ans B

Let the days be : M T W Th F S Su

Books Sold: S = Max
F = 2nd Max

Ques is: Is F > 11 or What is Min value of F or (2nd Max)?

Stmt1) Store sold 8 copies on Thursday.
In this scenario, if we put Thursday as 8, we can arrange the books sold on Saturday to a higher value to adjust.
Eg: M=1, T = 2, W=3, W=4, Th = 8, F=10, S=53 , Su = 9 where F<10
Similarly if F=12, S = 51 where F>11

Insufficient.

Stmt 2) S = 38 => Rest of the books = 90-38 = 52
We know F is 2nd Maximum.

Hence let us try filling in 11 as a value for Friday (all the rest will be less than 11)

If F is 11, then books left to be divided among 5 days = 52-11 = 41

The max books that can be sold on rest of the days: 10 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 6 = 40 <41

Hence, at least 12 books must be sold on Friday.

Sufficient.
