Which round should I apply in?

by Wholio » Fri Sep 03, 2010 9:08 am
Hi There,

I've decided on about 3 or 4 schools that I'd like to apply to and am not sure how i should structure the timing of my applications.

I'm writing my GMAT in the 3rd week of Sept and am working hopefully towards ~700. I have an 80%/100% GPA from a Canadian school. For the past three years i've worked in Management Consulting with good experience and some good stories.

Given that i'm focused 100% on the GMAT right now, I'll only have 1-2 weeks before the 1st round of application deadlines. I can spend 100% of my time during those two weeks putting together my applications.

Should I try and get my applications out to my top 2 choices in the 1st round, and then my next 3 schools in the 2nd? OR - should I just apply to all 5 in the 2nd round. Will 2 weeks (1week per application) give me enough time to put together the amazing application I need? Also, I haven't been able to connect with the folks that I'd like to get references from. I wont be able to reach one person in particular until the 2nd week of sept. I don't know if 2 weeks is enough notice to get a killer reference.

I've heard that its easier to get in on the 1st round? Is this true?

Appreciate any help and advice you can give.
Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for your post. You ask a very good question, one I am sure is on the minds of many. I always advise my clients to apply in round one, however, this is a caveat... You should always apply when you are ready. I agree that right now you should be focusing 100% of your attention on the GMAT and should only begin your applications once you have taken the exam and are happy with your score. However, I really don't think it's realistic to put together one let alone several bschool applications in just a two week period. You might feel rushed (as you would be) and your essays might reflect this. I think it is probably best to wait until round 2 when you can put your best foot forward.

Regards,

Stacey

Thanks Stacey!

Thats what I was thinking - I just needed someone to agree with me! :)

I feel much less stressed out about my applications now knowing that I've got enough time to polish them.
