Q5 answer?

This question seems easy one. However, I chose mistake one. I chose B while the correct one is E. Who can explain me?

Q5:
If (y+3)(y-1) – (y-2)(y-1) = r(y-1), what is the value of y?
(1) r2 = 25
(2) r = 5
A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is
sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

on simplifying te stem we get 5y -5 = r(y-1)

From 1 r^2 = 25 so r cud be -5 or 5 Hence two values hence insufficient


From 2 r = 5 still we cant find r as both values of equation are cancelled out

I think that
simplify the equation as :
(y+3) - (y-2) = r
<=> r = 5
I do not know the correct is E ??

It looks like y ends up cancelling itself out, so there isn't enough information in either question to find y. You can get r from the original equation and from both the statements, but that doesn't appear to get you any closer to finding y.
