can someone please explain what the suffix -tion does to a word?

object -- > objection
cancel --> cancellation

It results in a noun.

Tom objects to the jury's verdict because he is sure that the defendant is guilty.
Tom's objection to the jury's verdict stands strong because he is sure that the defendant is guilty.

The flight wascanceled and this cancellation led to severe chaos at the airport.
