5 Days to Improve Verbal

by Whizpopper » Mon Aug 23, 2010 5:35 pm
Hello everyone,

I have been lurking around this site for quite some time now but I am very quiet.

I am writing the GMAT next Monday (August 30th) and I still can't seem to improve my verbal. I am a non-native speaking individual and would like some advice on how I can improve on some minor details to improve my score. The last time I and first time I wrote the GMAT score was 530 (37q, 25v).

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you,

Whizpopper

Sentence Correction = Do a lot of questions and review idioms, parallelism rules, verb modifiers, etc. Five days is not a lot of time to improve your sentence correction.

Reading Comp = Try writing notes as you read. You don't need to actually review what you write. The notes don't need to be legible. But the process of writing stimulates your brain's ability to comprehend what you're reading. My verbal score increased dramatically when I started doing this.

Critical Reasoning = Identify the type of questions you're strongest on (weaken, strengthen, find conclusion, find assumption, etc.) and do timed sets (20 questions, 30 mins). Read the conclusion before reading the premises. Eliminate extreme answers and out of scope answers.

Good luck.

Hi Kal750gmat,

Thanks for the advice and I will definitely keep those tips in mind for the next 5 days while I continue my studies and on test day.

I will let you know how things turn out on test day. :)

It's tough to master a whole section in five days. Try focusing on one or two fo the principles that are tested frequently and that are tricky to identify - e.g. parallelism and modification. If you really nail a couple of principles you will have a better chance of getting individual questions correct than if you "sort of" work on a whole list of topics.
