NEED ADVICE PLEASE....

hello Stacy!

I would like to ask your opinion on my odds of getting in into Langone Part time for spring 2008. I alreday submitted the application but was wondering maybe i should add another letter/essay to make it stronger.

Below are the stats
GMAT 600 (Q44, 72%; V28, 50%; AWA 5.0, 61%)
GPA 3.2 from PACE UNIVERSITY
some extracullicular activity,
excellent recommendation letters,
work 4 years in top investment Mgt company
i think good essays with clear goals

I know my gmat is on the lower side, but i have taken it many times and this is highest i ever got (BTW i had explained my numerous GMAT attempts in the optional essay).
Any chances at all?

I alreday got accepted into Baruch, but i want Stern. Any insight will be highly appreciated.

Hi ABMK,

If you have the time, I would re-take the GMAT (did you only take it once?) They will most likely look at a new score, and it would have more impact than a letter.

well i have taken in 8 times and started with 350.. the standardized test have never been my strength.
should i still take it again?

Hi ABMK,

No - you certainly should not take it again if you have taken it 8 times. Some schools regard taking the test more than 4 times as a negative.

I think at this point you should wait to see what the result is of your application. If you are waitlisted, you can write a letter, but I'm not sure it helps you before then.

Hi.
Schools DO look negativesly if more than 4 times? Wow. I did not know that. Now i am afraid even more..
But it looks like my chances are slim for Stern... very sad that GMAt weights so much compared to other parts of application.

Your advise: if i want Stern and i want part time and i will not get in this time, i will need to retake it as much as i have to get to at least 700. do you agree?

GMAT definitely does not weight in more than other factors, they are all pretty balanced as far as importance goes. That being said, 600 is definitely on the low side for Stern and I would say to concentrate on making the other parts of your application as phenomenal as you can.

I have tried to polish essays and have a good creative piece, and i do have good job in investment management top 10 company... but looks like the news are sad because of GMAT.

If you give up that easily, maybe you aren't cut out for an MBA anyways. Friendly joking aside, theres no reason to not pursue it to the fullest extent. I would be serious money that there have been people who got in with a 600 gmat. Whos to say you won't be one?

well i am that easy to give up since i ahve taken it 9 times... but according to he blog i ahve bene redaing,many people who have been admitted have 650+ GMATs. I know someone who submitted 15days after the application dedaline with 730 and got in within one week. How amazing is that...
so i am on the lower side, but still i guess have hope.
we will see... i will keep trying.. I am very persisant.

Your original question was whether you should write a letter or submit additional materials, and you told me that you have already applied. By suggesting that an improved GMAT would have more of an impact than a side letter, I was NOT implying that the GMAT has more weight than other factors in admissions - I just think it would have more weight in this situation than a letter.

No - my advice was to wait and see and IF it doesn't work out (I can't say if it will or not) you can re-evaluate your application and decide what aspects you can work on.

I guess at this point i will indeed sit and wait.
I forgot to mention that i am a reapplicant. Do you happen to know if schools keep application of denied students on file and go back to review those when students reapply?

Hi,
Don't lose hope. Your scores are obviously improving... I'd recommend taking it again. Really get to the bottom of your errors. You're familiar with the exam, so brush up on the basics and go in there and try to get a higher score. Of course people with lower than avg GMAT scores have been accepted, but if you truly want to attend Stern, I'd really polish your application with a higher score.
In addition, I read somewhere that Stern (at an information session) told a story about an applicant who took the GMAT 13 times. 13 TIMES!!! The school actually saw that as determination & persistence. So not ALL schools don't discredit applicants who have more than 4 GMAT scores under their record... Having said that, try another stab at it. It appears as though your application is pretty complete... ? (You mentioned your essays & recommendation letters in previous entries...) So, really concentrate on the exam once more for 3 wks... since R1 deadline isn't until November 15th...
In any case, if you choose not to retake, good luck! Don't completely count yourself out from the application pool.

13c times is encouraging.. i have only done 9. Well i am applying for part time and already sent my application. so answer will come in in next weeks or so, promised by stern by dec 1. I think i will wait for the answer, i am not anxious to study properly, BUT.. if i will not make it this time i will give myself enough try. I have to. I want stern and i think this school is a great fit for me and my career.

I wanted to let everyone know that i got in today to NYU Stern Langone program- my target school.
I am very happy and would like to thank everyone owho supported and helped me on this site thru this process.

Work experience 4+ years in top investment company
