Hi, I Gave the GMAT last year and scored a 680. I am Planning to apply this year to the universities in the US. But people are recommending me to give it again cause i screwed up Verbal. If i prepare for it again, i mite score more, but will have lesser time for the applications. Is it a good trade off? All the other aspects of my application remain the same. Ive just given the GMAT once, so isnt dat an advantage?
thanks

Hi Prateek,

If you can retake GMAT with say a month of prep and score 700 then it will actually make a difference. 700 is a psychological barrier and it will put you in a different category.

But obviously dont miss Round 2 also just for retaking GMAT as chances in R3 for Indian students are almost nil.

I disagree that there is a huge difference between a 680 and a 700. I think that if you are 100% sure that you are applying for school this year and have a thought that dedicating more time to GMAT studying will compromise your essay preparation, you should definitely dedicate more time to your essays.

You could get the best of both worlds by giving yourself 2 months to study (September + October), and apply to your schools in Round 2. No need to be afraid of applying in Round 2.

Remember - you may not score higher the next time you take it. And wouldn't that be a downer?

Good luck!
