MSc in Management at LSE

by sujayss » Mon Mar 15, 2010 11:02 am
Hi Stacy,

After reading so many detailed and thorough replies to your posts, it feels great to ask you a question in itself!

1. I have secured admission at the MSc in Management course at London School of Economics.
Could you tell me something more about the course- career prospects from a highly rated school on MSc in Management as well as a little bit of the

MiM vs MBA trade- off.

I am an undergrad from india, seeking a shift to consulting preferably.

2. I have also secured admission to the Young Talent Programme at IESE Navarra. (I hope you treat this as a separate question, different from the first one). I know IESE is one of the top- rated schools in the world, but it requires two years of working life before the MBA. Given that I have an LSE MiM admit, which of the two courses would you advice.

It would be just awesome if you could list out the pros and cons of each course so that I can consider your advice in- depth and take an informed decision.

Thanks a lot,
It would be good if you could reply soon as my decision deadlines approach,

Reagrds,

Sujay SS

Dear Sujay,

Congratulations on your admission offers! What a luxurious choice you have to make and I can understand your difficulty. As you have already noted, there are distinct differences between these two programs and thus your rationale for why you applied to each should be reviewed. I think you should probably step back and think about what you envision your career to look like over the long-term--where do you see yourself? where do you want to be in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? Then think about each of these programs and ask yourself if one seems to be a better fit for your vision.

When deciding between two programs, only you can really make that decision. Likewise, the pros and cons of a program for you are different than the pros and cons of the program for someone else. While there might be considerable overlap, there are many dimensions which you should consider which are quite personal. For example, you might value a metropolitan location like London more than someone else due to the fact your significant other will be with you and needs to find work. Or, you might find the culture of one school to be a better fit for your personality--you feel more comfortable there and the type of students are more like you. Similarly, you need to decide what aspects of these programs are most important to you and see how each of these programs measures up. Is career services and placement record more important than curriculum? Are course offerings more important than industry connections? Are consulting projects an absolute must?

If you have specific questions around the school's career prospects, then you should ask the school. Most schools are happy to answer questions from admitted candidates to aid in their decision-making. If the school is not willing to answer your questions, then that might tell you something also.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Dear Miss Stacy,

Thank you so very much for that prompt reply!

It gives me great pleasure to hear those re- assuring words.

In your reply, you mentioned how I must identify with my long term aims before deciding my course. How does this vary between the MBA and the MiM.

Are there, very generally, significant salary and profile differences between MiM (from say LSE) and MBA students.

Some other significant differences between the MiM and MBA courses would be welcome. Not specifics which various from college to college but general ones.

Thanks again!
