A little dramatic perhaps..
Just coming to this forum and browsing puts you ahead of the vast majority of people out there. There are a lot of people who simply take it to take it. The first time I took it, the guy taking it next to me was just taking it because his employer wanted to, he didn't even study.
It's hard not to get overwhelmed by the test, but you simply have to break it down to sections and study each section until you reach a level you are comfortable. Take a few practice tests, and work on your weaknesses. You'll get there.
There are plenty out there that have gone from around 500 up to near 700 or above. It's just a matter of how hard you want to work.
Schedule a re-take and really apply yourself, don't let one test deny you of your goals.
