Ancient records_Again!

by gmat_perfect » Sat Jul 31, 2010 11:35 am
Based on records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress a statue of the goddess Athena and that this robe depicted scenes of a battle between Zeus, Athena's father, and giants.

(A) Based on records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress
(B) Based on records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women had collaborated to weave a new woolen robe with which to dress
(C) According to records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress
(D) Records from ancient Athens indicate that each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe with which they dressed
(E) Records from ancient Athens indicate each year young Athenian women had collaborated to weave a new woolen robe for dressing
OA: D

I can eliminate A, B, and E.

I am between C and D.

Would any one explain what are the difference between C and D?

=> I have read the explanations from Ron, the stunning explanation provider, gmatfix, and others. I could not get the desired explanation.

Does any one have a good explanation?

Thanks.
Well even i chose C first but it is D. The D maintains parallelism with 'that'. It make the sentence clear by ensureing that record indicates 2 things -

I got C too. I see the parallelism that D draws, but D just sounds too awkard.

I think it should be D.

I eliminated A, B and C first because they start with Based on and According to - The "Record" itself is indicative word, so it does not necessarily be followed by According and Based. D seems more proper.

Can someone provide better explaination or let me know if I am thinking in wrong direction.

IMO D

Eliminated A,B,C because of the misplaced modifier.

Between D and E, D maintains parallelism.

Hence D wins.

Hi gmat_perfect,

I will take a stab at explaining this question to you.

Since you have confusion between Choices C and D only, I will only discuss these two choices.

Essentially, C is incorrect because it distorts the intended meaning of the sentence by changing the list.

Intended Meaning - Per the original sentence, the ancient records indicate two things:
1: Athenian women weaved new woolen robe
2: This robe depicted scenes of a battle

Now lets review Choice C.

(C) According to records from ancient Athens, each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe that they used to dress a statue of the goddess Athena and that this robe depicted scenes of a battle between Zeus, Athena's father, and giants.

Notice that the use of 'and' in this sentence indicates that there is a list as follows:
(To understand the sentence structure better, I will simplify this choice.)

According to certain records, some women made woolen robe

1: that they used to dress a statue
and
2: that this robe depicted scenes

Error 1 - As you can see, this choice changes the intended list. Now the two elements of the list define the robe instead of the intended meaning of defining what the ancient records indicate.

Error 2 - Element 2 of the list is worded awkwardly
Element 1 of the list - ...robe that they used to dress a statue.. - Looks correct
Element 2 of the list - ...robe that this robe depicted scenes... - This is awkward wording.

Now we will do similar analysis of Choice D.

(D) Records from ancient Athens indicate that each year young Athenian women collaborated to weave a new woolen robe with which they dressed a statue of the goddess Athena and that this robe depicted scenes of a battle between Zeus, Athena's father, and giants.

Records indicate

1: that each year women weave robe...
and
2: that this robe depicted scenes...

This choice correctly communicates the intended meaning of the sentence and has no grammatical errors.

Let me know if this helps.
