All of the members of club Y are either Democrats or Republicans. If 1/2 of the male members and 3/5 of the female members are Democrats, what is the ratio of the number of males to the number of females in the club?

(1) In club Y the number of female members is one less than the number of male members.
(2) In club Y the number of male Republican members is equal to the number of female Democratic members.

i got B
let it be the number of male-m, and the number of female-m
we are given that 1/2*m=male democrats, 3/5*f-female democrats
we need to find (m/f)-?

(1) f=m-1 no way to solve insufficient
(2) thenumber of male republican=m-(1/2)m=1/2m, the number of female republican=f-(3/5)f=(2/5)f
and these figures are equal
(1/2)m=(2/5)f, from here m/f=4/5 sufficient

(1) In club Y the number of female members is one less than the number of male members.
(2) In club Y the number of male Republican members is equal to the number of female Democratic members.
st 1: if we take the total number of members of club Y: let male members equal to 26 and let females equal to 25, then we can take out the ratio of males to females. males will be 26/2= 13, females will be 25*3/5=15, so ratio is 13:15.

st 2: the information is not sufficient to answer it does not help us to find the ratio of men and women by knowing that the republican and democrat females are equal in terms of male and females.

therefore ans. A

please prove me wrong if i am missing something somewhere!

(1) In club Y the number of female members is one less than the number of male members.
(2) In club Y the number of male Republican members is equal to the number of female Democratic members.[/quote]

D, R be the number of Democrats and Republicans respectively.
M and F be be the number of Males and Females respectively.

M/2+3F/5 = D

(1) In club Y the number of female members is one less than the number of male members.
F=M-1
M/2+3F/5 = D

2 eqtns and 3 unknowns. Hence, we cannot get the ratio.
INSUFF

(2) In club Y the number of male Republican members is equal to the number of female Democratic members.
Number of Male republican members = M/2
Number of Female Democratic members = 3F/5
Hence M/2 = 3f/5
M/F = 6/5
Hence SUFF

pick B
