Americans give pride of place to the value of individual liberty, and we find especially unintelligible the infliction of suffering on the innocent.

a) especially unintelligible the infliction of suffering

b) especial unintelligible the infliction of suffering

c) especially unintelligible suffrage that is inflicted

d) especially unintelligible the suffering that is inflicted

e) especially unintelligible the inflicting to suffer

IMO A.

Although both A and D look grammatically correct, it looks to me that D changes the meaning.. the original sentence says that infliction of suffering is unintelligible, whereas D says suffering is unintelligible..

I also had marked D but the answer is A.

Hardik's explanation matches that of Cambridge's explanation ;-)

I wish I understood the statement (what does "pride of place" mean?)

B is clearly wrong -- use of "especial"

My first instinct was to look for parallelism since "and" was used as a conjunction.
The ending needed to be parrallel to "...the value of....."

Only A is parrellel to this "the infliction of..." (Ans: A)
