have bug collections

by sanju09 » Sat Jul 10, 2010 5:55 am
Anthony and Carolyn have bug collections. If they combined their collections, they would have a collection of twenty bugs. Which of the following statements could not be true?
(A) Carolyn has a dozen bugs.
(B) Anthony has eleven bugs.
(C) Anthony has one more bug than Carolyn.
(D) Carolyn has two more bugs than Anthony.
(E) Carolyn has one bug.

A, B, and E can all be eliminated pretty quickly: if Carolyn had 12, Anthony could have 8; if Anthony had 11, Carolyn could have 9; if Carolyn had 1, Anthony could have 19. Looking at those numbers, we can also eliminate choice D; by switching the names, we see that Carolyn could have 11 and Anthony could have 9. 11 is 2 more than 9, so D is possible. That just leaves C. If Anthony had one more bug than Carolyn, one of them would have an odd number of bugs and one would have an even number. An odd + an even equals an odd number, and 20 is even, so this is impossible. Choice C could not happen, and therefore is the correct answer.

Totally Stumped. Answering logically.. llike CR.

Since Question says both A and C have bug collections, E could not be true.

What is OA?
