profitable only overseas!

by gmat_perfect » Thu Jul 08, 2010 12:28 pm
The computer company registered a $16 million net loss for the year, largely because it was profitable only overseas, where much of their profits were used for paying higher taxes, while continuing to lose money in North America.

(A) where much of their profits were used for paying higher taxes, while continuing
(B) where much of their profits went to pay higher taxes, as they continued
(C) where much of its profit went to pay higher taxes, while it continued
(D) with much of their profits going to pay higher taxes, while continuing
(E) with much of the profit used for paying higher taxes, as it continued

What are the main problems with D and E?

D=> Their can not refer to the company.
D=> While continuing is awkward.

Is the use of "with much..." is the option D and E are wrong?

Thanks.

IMO C.

in both D and E, the phrase following "overseas" is not modifying overseas. use of "where" will exactly reflect overseas.

All options as you said can be removed that have "their" as company is singular, leaving us with only C and E

My pick is C as where clearly refers back to overseas and while is required to show the loss of money was constantly going on.

In C "while" is a indicative of "time".

In E "as" is used as "comparison".

So pick C

the problem with D is that it uses " their profits" bc their here is company's profit thus it must be its profit or the profit
the problem with E is " ....of the profit used for paying" . the correct idiom is used to
C is my answer
