Is this senetence correct?

GUys,

I was reading a reputed newspaper article and found following sentence:

SOME discoveries are so unusual it takes years, decades and sometimes centuries to understand their full significance.

I just wanted to know what you think about the correctness of this sentence.

In my opinion the correct version should be as follows:

SOME discoveries are so unusual THAT it takes years, decades and sometimes centuries to understand their full significance.

Let me know what GMAT experts think!

I can think of a couple of ways to rewrite that sentence:

1) Some discoveries are so unusual THAT it takes years, decades or sometimes centuries to understand their full significance.

2) Some discoveries are so unusual, it takes years, decades or sometime centuries to understand their full significance

In my opinion, there shouldn't be an "and" in "...years, decades and sometimes...". Instead, it should be an "or".

my answer was
rather than thinking it is blunder ...you should confess that gmat and real life english is not the same...

gmat tries more for 'more right' better (not good only)
while in real life
most of the time it is conveying meaning...
i have heard people saying 'long time no see'
gmat will say...this is bad sentence...lol
