Please, please review my Analysis of an Issue

"Clearly, government has a responsibility to support the arts. However, if that support is going to produce anything of value, government must place no restrictions on the art that is produced."
To what extent do you agree or disagree with the opinion expressed above? Develop your position by giving specific reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

My Essay:

According to the above statement, government should support the arts, but at the same time it must have no restrictions on the art that is produced. I agree with this statement. The government must support the arts, and at the same time should let the artists create without interference. By supporting the art, the government is supporting the freedom of expression, the beauty of humankind, and the artist inside each of us.

First of all, I believe that if the art is supported then the freedom of thought and freedom of speech are also supported. Letting an artist create what is in his/her mind is very important for the entire society. Most of the people don't like to read articles or books written by people who work for a TV station or a newspaper that supports a certain political party. The reason is that many times the author doesn't really write about his/her true thoughts, but about newspapers' best interests - that meaning praising one political party and criticizing the rival party. This is especially known in totalitarian regimes, where much of art is produced at government's indications. This type of art does not let one's talent shine and express itself, but puts it in the shadow, hiding it, rejecting the real visions.

Also, art is considered the most gracious side of mankind. Through art we can transform the world, see the life in different colors, be in love continuously, and stay hopeful no matter of circumstances. How divine is that? If government takes that away from us the world would be a darker place. We need Romeo and Juliette, we need Monalisa, and The Swan Lake. Art in general is very diverse, if someone puts some restrictions, then artists may found themselves in a dilemma - not being able to produce what is really in their minds. At the same time, even if they do produce art "by command" then lots of it will be similar.

Furthermore, by supporting the art, the artist in each of us is sustained. We all are artists in our own way. Government should support the sharing of ideas and creativity. This is for everyone's best. Even though, some art that is produced might not be in government's favor, that doesn't mean that is bad. Constructive criticism should be welcomed. Through art we can understand better each other. Art enables us to communicate without words. And honestly, government should not have restrictions, because art can be subtle also. Therefore, although a painting, for example, may appear to reflect one thing, the connoisseurs will understand that there is more than what it seems to be at the first look.

In conclusion, I just want to reinstate my agreement that government should support the art, but without imposing any boundaries. Art is a magnificent part of the society, it offers us so many ways of expression, it shows us the life in so many different lights, and enables us to develop our inner artist.

Thank you!
