which one is correct and why?

They had never met an australian before they met crocodile dundee
OR
They never met an australian before meeting crocodile dundee.

First one is correct.

There are 2 past events:
1. Met an Australian
2. Met crocodile dundee

To convey the sequence for these 2 activity, we use 'had' to the more past activity.
