In some countries, television and radio programs are carefully censored for offensive language and behavior. In other countries, there is little or no censorship.
In your view, to what extent should government or any other group be able to censor television or radio programs? Explain, giving relevant reasons and/or examples to support your position.
The issue, the extent to which the government or any other body be allowed to censor any television or radio program for offensive language and behavior, is a controversial one and has aroused heated debates in the recent years. The issue holds a considerable importance in the era of information and technology. On one hand, some believe that the government should carefully censor the programs before broadcast. On the other hand , some do not agree with the former extent of censorship. This is because they believe that by doing so their freedom of speech and expression is curbed. However, when juxtaposed with the former alternative the latter claim seems less attractive. The first proposal provides a comprehensive solution to a well behaved society not only because of its strength but also because of its logical analysis in times of ground realities and practical difficulties.
First and Foremost I would like to throw light on why television and radio should be censored. We have three basic sources of information namely: newspapers, television and radio. Out of these I believe that television and radio affect the audience the most. Consider a country like India where more than 40% of the population is illiterate. Can illiterate people read newspapers? I know your answer would be in negative. For such people information is gathered through television and radio programs. So the quality of information in these media sources is extremely important.
There are a number of reasons because of which I strongly support the idea of careful censorship of broadcast media. First of all, I believe that children, who are below the age of 10, are most affected by such objectionable programs. Children have an impressionable mind. It is very easy to effect their minds. Recently there was a case in India in which a few school children kidnapped their classmate for some ransom after watching some programs on television. They used the same offensive language as used by one of the programs they had watched on television. When these children were caught ,they informed the police officer that they did this for having fun and that their actions were governed by one of the television programs.
Secondly, adults are also affected by such offensive programs. In one of recent cases it was reported that a man planned murder of his wife after seeing a similar course of action on television. Some people tried burglary and bank robbery after learning about such offensive behavior from television and radio.
Thirdly, offensive language and behavior on media hampers the culture of the country. On one hand where offensive language ruins their vocabulary. People tend to use an offensive vocabulary in the name of a stylish bejaviour. On the other hand offensive behavior encourages them to do illegal actions either for publicity or may be simply fun.
I believe freedom of speech and expression is important but not at the cost of the society. Media plays an important role in shaping the thoughts and beliefs of people and hence needs to be careful of their broadcast.
As evident from the points addressed above and its supporting argument, the proposal that government and other bodies should carefully censor television and radio programs is better and is less likely to be undermined by the potential drawbacks.
