The fine on day 1 is $0.10. The late fine is either doubled or increased by $0.30 whichever is lower. So on day 2, the fine is doubled to $0.20 (since doubling is less than $0.30) On day 3, the fine is again doubled to $0.40 (again because doubling is lower). On day 4, the fine is increased by $0.30 to $0.70 (since doubling makes it $0.80 which is higher)

Hope me answer is not too confusing!

Day 1 : $0.10
Day 2 : ($0.10 + $0.30 = $0.40 OR $0.10 * 2 = $0.20 ) => $0.20
Day 3 : ($0.20 + $0.30 = $0.50 OR $0.20 * 2 = $0.40 ) => $0.40
Day 4 : ($0.40 + $0.30 = $0.70 OR $0.40 * 2 = $0.80 ) => $0.70

Hence, amount on Day 4 would be $0.70.
