Difference in GPA on score report and actual GPA

Hi Stacy,

I am an engineering graduate from India. My university uses a percentage system for awarding marks.

Using the link that you had posted in one of the responses on this forum, I have calculated my GPA to be 3.6. (I apologize for being unable to provide the link in this note coz I searched but could not retrace it).
But on MBA.com, the portal uses a different scale of making a percentage to GPA conversion and as a result - my GPA on my GMAT score report is coming as 2.8.

I have two questions to you, about presenting of such an error in GPA calculation to the AdCom -
1) how should I address this issue..coz nowhere in the apps of any of the university - percentage based system is asked - rather only a column for GPA is there.
2) Is the GPA mentioned on the GMAT score report noticed by the AdCom - or is it just another field to be filled and ignored ?

Please provide response to these questions.

1) You should call each school and ask how they would like to handle it. This happens all the time and school policies vary. They may have a separate formula they would like you to use. There may be a way to indicate % rank, even in an essay or additional information, depending on the app.
2) Most schools will look at the official score report after you have already been admitted. But if there is a big discrepancy between your GPA on that report and what you have reported to them, you should be able to explain it. So make sure that you are using their preferred method to report your GPA.
