Help - Low CGPA score for GMAT

by rakkey1 » Tue Jun 08, 2010 11:43 pm
Hi,

I was registering an appointment for GMAT when I found that my percentage score of 54% in undergrad was equivalent to a CGPA score of 0.4. Since my graduation in 2006, I have a total work experience of over 3 years. I do not have much of extra curricular activities to show, however, I have been among the top performers during my 3 years experience. I am worried about how detrimental would this to my application to B-schools. Also, how can I work to show that I am still a good candidate for the course?

Request urgent help on this.

Thanks,
Vineet

Hi,

Thanks for your post. First off, are you sure you did the conversation to the US GPA scale correct? Secondly, what is the reason for your GPA? Did you work full time? Did something else take up your time during undergrad? You'll want to have a sound explanation for this and will need to include this explanation in your applications. Lastly, you'll need to score exceptionally well on the GMAT in order to mitigate your GPA. I also encourage you to enroll in several courses such as statistics and accounting and earn A's.

Best,

Stacey

The conversion itself is causing confusion to me. I saw the conversion chart on mba.com while registering an appointment.
The table is as below:

Can you please advise under which bracket would I fall?

Your help is highly appreciated!!

Hi,

What was the total grade scale? In other words, was your 54% considered an "F" on your schools' grade system? Where did you go to school?

Thanks,

I graduated from University of Delhi, India. 54% is considered to be second division.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. I was on vacation last week. In regard to your situation, bschools have a calibration system in place for GPAs from non US schools. The system is based in the competitiveness of the school and major and correlates with the grading scale for that particular country. Yours will not likely be interpreted as an F. No need to worry.

Thanks Stacey for your response. Needed one more favour from you. Since GMAT scores are valid for 5 years, is it better if I take GMAT in September and apply for B-schools next year? This would give me time to consider some short term courses and improve on my extra-curricular activities. What do you suggest?

Appreciate your help!

Thanks,
Vineet

Hi,

I think that is a great idea. Plus, should your initial GMAT score not be exactly what you'd like it to be, you will have plenty of time to retake it.

Best of luck,

Stacey
