List of universities to choose before score

After giving the actual GMAT and before getting the scores are we required to choose a list of universities to apply.What is the need for this when we separately apply to each bschool.

When you apply to a school, you would have to report the GMAT scores to the schools through GMAC. This is in addition to you submitting score reports. You can choose upto 5 schools at the end of the test. There are no separate charges for this. However if you chose to request GMAC post test for score reporting, you will be charged on a per school basis.

I would suggest you give 5 schools of your choice (as of now, if you have not decided for sure)

I am also told that the universities are classified based on the states and cities. So are we to remember the states and cities of the universities(atleast the 5 I plan to apply initially).
If I understand right, we cannot submit copies of our GMAT transcript to universities, all scores are to be routed through GMAC, isnt it?

If you apply to schools which require the GMAT, then you have to give them your GMAT score; they won't accept your application otherwise. And if you give GMAC permission to share your score with a school, that school will see ALL of your scores for the previous 5 years. So if you don't like your first test, and you take it again and "send" those scores (you're not really sending anything - you're just giving the schools permission to access your scores), then they will see both tests anyway.

Your questions seems to indicate that you can choose to show a GRE score instead - check with the school on this, because not many b-schools will accept the GRE in place of the GMAT. Of course, if your school does accept the GRE instead, then yes, you might not want to select schools before the test. Just be aware that you will have to pay $28 per school after the test if you do decide you want to send the scores. (You can pick up to 5 schools for free before the test.)
