Jean-Jacques Rousseau contended that man is good only when in "the state of nature" but is corrupted by society, that compels man to compare himself to others.

A. man is good only when in "the state of nature" but is corrupted by society, that
B. only man is good when in "the state of nature" but is corrupted by society, that
C. man is good when in "the state of nature" but is corrupted only by society, that
D. only man is good when in "the state of nature" but is corrupted by society, which
E. man is good only when in "the state of nature" but is corrupted by society, which

Shifting the position of ONLY will change the meaning.

I will eliminate B, C and D.

I believe that THAT is not required in A.

I would like to go with E.

What is OA?

IMO E.

'Only man' in B and D changes the meaning of the sentence. So B and D are ruled out.
Just like B and D, misplaced 'only' in choice C changes the meaning.

Remaining choices, A and E, are trying to test- That Vs Which with Modifiers

'That' is used to introduce a modifier that is used to narrow the identity of the modified noun and cannot logically be removed.

Use 'Which' to introduce a 'middleman' modifier, usually set off by commas, that is a non-essential descriptive phrase that could be removed from the sentence.

Since we are not trying to narrow down to one particular society out of many, I believe which is the correct usage. And hence I would choose E.

Choce bwtn A & E
