I am trying to get some inputs for some great goals/careers for someone with IT background. I am interested in management in an IT+Finance company and also interested in doing tech consulting. I am not sure if that is a "good goal" in terms of applications or to adcom or there is some other goal I should have to make it more interesting? Any suggestions? thanks

Dear shaselai,

Your career goals should be what they are--YOUR career goals. What do you want to do with your career? Why do you need an MBA? What do you want to do when you finish business school? Where do you see yourself 10 years post-MBA? There is not a "right answer" or "preferred career path" for MBA admissions. The best answer is the truth on what you want to do and why the MBA makes sense for you. If you are interested in moving into management, then do some research and be more specific on what type of management. You note you want to work in "an IT+Finance company" so that helps as well. I encourage you to do some research to define your goals a bit more, perhaps identify some companies of interest to you. Your interest in your actual goals will be what is interesting to the admissions committee.

Good luck,
Lisa

Thanks Lisa,

would the following goal be OK to adcom and a good goal? It is something I know I would love to do in the future but not sure if it is a good goal in their eyes.

I always had a passion for gaming and had a goal working for a gaming company. This led to me and a couple of friends in developing a game and possibly creating a startup company if the product does well. With the MBA I am hoping I could gain entry into game companies' marketing department and in the long term goal I could be a consultant for startup gaming companies.

If that is your passion and what you truly want to do, then why not? I think we can all agree that gaming companies are making lots of money these days and that industry is not going away. I do think you should be cognizant of where that industry is clustered and look for schools near hubs of the industry. Also, your goals will be more realistic the more you can show the admissions committee you have done your research on who the "players" are in the industry and what you might need to do on your own to land a position with one.

Good luck,
Lisa
