Candle purchases

by narisipalli » Fri May 28, 2010 1:11 am
At the beginning of a certain week, a certain gift store had 550 candles in stock, which the store had purchased for $0.25 each. If, during the week, the store made exactly one additional purchase of candles, how much did the store pay for the candles that it had in stock at the end of the week?

(1) During the week, the store's sales for candles totaled $120.
(2) During the week, the store purchased a box of 200 candles for a total of $40.00.

I did not understand the explanation given for the answer. I marked B as the answer but Correct answer is E. Can anyone of you explain and show how you would approach this DS problem and arrive at an answer.

Thanks

According to the question the store had two type of candles one is of $0.25 each and another is not known (say x)

we have to find out which type of candle was left at the week

from 1
total sale volume is given but neither number of candles nor the selling price ,so we cannot conclude anything...not sufficient

From 2
we know another is of $0.20 each.Question i.e x=$0.20..still we don't know which one types is sold during the week

combining two statements also is not sufficient to tell which type of candles were sold and which is left..hence ans option E
