Is TOEFEL or IELTS important - GMAT Admissions?

Hi,

I have heard from few consultants that having a TOEFEL and IELTS score is important in GMAT admission process. Could you please share your views on the same? How important is it?


My Brief Profile

10th - 68% (Kendriya Vidyalaya)
12th - 81% (Kendriya Vidyalaya)

B-Tech - 76% (K.N.I.T - Electronics and Comm)
GMAT - 740 [Verbal - 40(89%) and Quantitative - 50(93%)]
Essays - 5.5 (76%)

Primary mode of communication was English all through out my graduation.

Work Experience

Total - 4 Years 7 Months (as in April 2010), Company - Infosys Technologies Limited

- Includes 10 months international experience
- Primary language for communication is English all through the work ex.

Hi Vijay, Maybe you didn't get a reply as your question is a bit confusing. I guess you mean is TOEFL or IELTS important for an MBA admission?

That depends. If your native language is NOT English and/or you did not earn a degree from an English-language university, then YES, most schools will require an English Proficiency Test. The requirement may be waived if you have lived and/or worked in an English-speaking country. Each school has its own standards and requirements, you must check their websites to find out:

a) if you need an English proficiency test or not

b) the type of test you can take
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is the most popular English proficiency test though many universities will also accept the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and/or the PTE (Pearson Test of English). TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is less popular for MBA programs.

c) the minimum score needed
For example, regarding TOEFL, HBS asks for 109, Kellogg doesn't have a minimum but the average is 110, INSEAD requests a 105.
