Should I retake the GMAT?

by jomipen30 » Sun May 16, 2010 10:59 am
Hello:

GMAT Score: 680
Verbal: 36
Quatitative: 47
AWA: 5.0

Nationality: American (Mexican descent)

I've worked as an Applications Engineer (technical sales) in the Oil & gas Industry for 3 years. My degree is BS in Mechanical Engineering from University of Texas Austin.

As far as extra curricular activities, I volunteer with a minority outreach program that aims to increase interest in the engineering field.

I am plan on applying for enrollment for Fall 2011, but I would like to know if my score is high enough, for a top 15 school, based on my background.

Your help would be truly appreciated.

Dear jomipen30,

If you feel you are a strong writer, good interviewee, and will have excellent letters of recommendation, then I think you should apply to some top 15 programs. Your GMAT is competitive, even though slightly below average, as you have a strong quantitative foundation and your score within the mid-50% range. To give yourself the best chance, your entire application package will need to make a compelling case for your admission and be of the highest quality. I would also encourage you to have a mix of schools, some reasonable and safety options, to ensure you will be in business school in fall 2011.

Good luck,
Lisa
