Resumes for Management Consultants

by lhommefm » Fri May 14, 2010 11:58 am
Hi,

I work in management consulting, primarily in retail operations, and will have done so for 3 years by the time I submit my application. I've typically done unique projects in 3-6 month chucks, most with good stories, so I have a good amount to include in my resume (likely about 6 major projects by submission time). Since this is my first full time job, my other professional experience is working part time at school and various internships (4 total on my current resume).

Given the space (and reader attention span!) constraints, how much space should I allocate to the other internships/part time work? Should I even mention them? Mention only 1 or two with the highest impact? My fear is that if not, I look rather one dimensional (one professional affiliation).

Cheers,

Jim

Dear Jim,

Your work experience post-bachelor's degree is the most important and will be what most admissions committees are interested in seeing on your resume. Ideally, you want to try and have a one page resume--remember, it is a highlight reel, not an exhaustive summary. If you have some space to include part-time and internship experiences, then you should. You can put them under your experience section or even under an "other" section at the bottom with things like hobbies and extracurriculars. Keep in mind, even if it is not on your resume, you will be putting it in your application as most applications will ask for that information--so the admissions committees will see that you have worked during college in other industries/capacities.

Good luck,
Lisa
