AWA...How important is it

by kmaro » Sat May 01, 2010 1:26 pm
Hi everyone,

I am applying to Concordia university's M.Sc. administration program and MBA program. They require a 550 and a 580 on the GMAT. I wrote the exam today and I got a 650. I know it's not an amazing score but I think it is fine given the requirements.
I am really worried about the AWA, especially the issue essay. I had a mental block and the essay is not very well thought out (I am not even sure if I completely addressed the topic). In any case, I didn't have time to completely finish it. My question is how important is the AWA, they didn't give any requirements for it in the admissions guidelines. If I fail (get less than a 4) on either essay or both should I rewrite the exam?

THANKS!!!!

In general, business schools do not weigh the results of your AWA too much in your candidacy. Try to shoot for a 4.0+, but if you get a little lower than that I wouldn't worry too much about that. As long as you can demonstrate proficiency of language in your essays and interviews, that could more than compensate for poor AWA.

Also, are you a native English speaker? If so, then the AWA tends to matter even less in your admissions. Good luck!
