Counseling Appt @ Kelley

by salmaan » Sun Apr 18, 2010 3:58 pm
Hey all:

I applied to Kelley's full-time MBA program. [removed by author]. My GMAT is above their average. I have some pretty solid essays and recs from [removed by author].

I am going down for a campus visit next week. MBA class, lunch with students, tour of the Godfrey Center, Info Session, and a Counseling appointment with an Associate Director of Admissions.

The way that Kelley works is that you can:
a.) Request an interview BEFORE your application
b.) Get invited to interview AFTER your application

I have submitted my application, so I can only interview by invitation. However, I'd like to use this Counseling Appointment to make a good impression on the Committee. Counseling appointments are usually reserved for early in the application process to ask questions about the program, but again, I want to use this opportunity to make a good impression and get an interview in a couple weeks.

Any advice on how to prepare? Thanks!

Dear salmaan,

I commend you for preparing for your appointment as you should treat it like an interview, even though it is not being called one. Any time you meet with a representative from a school, you will be evaluated to some degree as the meeting will be documented and impressions made. You should go in with some thoughtful questions on the school, aspects of the program, and a great case for why you and Kelley are perfect for one another. Don't be afraid to ask for feedback on your profile so that you can make arguments as to why a potential weakness should not be a concern.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Thanks, Lisa -They actually invited me to interview that morning, so my counseling session was cancelled.

My interview will be on Tuesday, May 4. It will be with a 2nd year Kelley student. Any insight specific to Kelley here? Thanks!

Yeah! That is great news! Kelley is very community-oriented, meaning collegial, teamwork, and involvement. So, demonstrating your fit with Kelley and Kelley being a fit for you is critical. Have thoughtful questions prepared as well.

Best of luck!
