disappointed with manhattan gmat...

by aerodan1 » Fri Apr 16, 2010 9:04 pm
just finished taking the 6th mgmat cat, and my test is next saturday. anyways, got a 740, which is 30 points higher than my previous high of 710. the quant. section was tough and nasty like always, so im ok with that. however, the verbal section was PATHETIC. it was way too easy, and i had loads of time going down the stretch. i just checked, and there were only 7 700-800 level questions out of the entire 41 (i ended up in the 99th percentile, with a score of 45 on this section).

i just went over all of my verbal scores, and the number of 700-800 level questions I encountered in each exam.

1st cat: 35 verbal, 24 700-800 level questions
2nd cat: 41 verbal, 30 700-800 level questions
3rd cat: 38 verbal, 27 700-800 " "
4th cat: 39 verbal, 21 700-800 " "
5th cat: 41 verbal, 13 700-800 " "
6th cat: 45 verbal, 7 700-800 " "

i only got 6 questions wrong, and yet only received 7 high level questions. one of the questions was also a repeat. to me, mgmat ran out of challenging questions to ask, and it seems that it was a problem on the 5th cat, though to a lesser extent. I feel that such a discrepancy among tests reveals a true flaw in these exams. I hate to hate on mgmat, because I own 4 of their guides, which I think are excellent. I also think that these cats, overall, have been a great asset. I am simply frustrated that I cannot get a fair verbal challenge during these last two cats, especially this awful 6th cat verbal section. Maybe its just a fluke, but I doubt it. It seems that MGMAT does not have enough tough verbal questions to substantiate 6 cats, maybe enough for 5. Perhaps a simple addition of 30 or so 700-800 level questions to the overall question bank is necessary, or perhaps it is much more complicated than that. - Dan

You want a fair verbal challenge? Pick up the old LSAT exams. In fact, I've seen a bunch of questions on them that are in the GMAT Official Guide 12 (Since the GMAC leases questions from the Law School Services). Granted, you won't have the SC sections, but the CR and RC are just like the GMAT's only all 700-800 level.

I'm with student22 on this one--if you want to squirm a little bit during your verbal practice, pick up an official LSAT book. The Official LSAT SuperPrep is my favorite because of the explanations, but pretty much any official LSAT book will do the trick. Much tougher than most of the questions in the GMAT official guides, and definitely more consistent, realistic, and difficult than the MGMAT CR/RCs.
