Wanted to Beat The GMAT..!!!!

by rajeshsources » Sat Apr 10, 2010 9:46 am
Hi folks,

This is Rajesh from India looking forward to Beat The GMAT with in next 2-3months. From this thread, I want to give the information like the same way how Eric has given his preparation details in a blog. But i will give the best practices. If you like just follow, if not then suggest me to improve. My only intention of doing this is because "One can learn more and get worth only by sharing it".

First day of GMAT Preparation:

Today, I am not inrush to enter into the GMAT strategies directly. Before doing that, first we should understand the GMAT how it tests us, how tricky it tests (in other words, how it tries to fool us). As we know already, GMAT tests only 10th standard basics. So, just go through the OG12 first chapter: "What is the GMAT?".

Why should we go through this OG12: 1st chapter?
Lets say some war is going on in Television, two kings were fighting each other. Assume king A and king B. King A knew the strengths and weaknesses of King B. Could we guess who wins? Definitely, we can say king A will win the war.
Here in GMAT, the GMAT Test is King B which does not know anything about the Test-taker's(King A) strengths & weaknesses. If you really want to crack the GMAT war, then you should know the plus & minus of end-to-end GMAT CAT Exam.

Once you have done with this chapter, now you are able to understand, in a war how your opponent will attack you. You are wrong, so far we came to know how GMAT CAT tests us. But we haven't gone through on what basis it will test us.
So, for that we should chart down the syllabus of GMAT. You should go through the syllabus of GMAT CAT what it will test exactly.

We should go through the syllabus, at the same time, we should know our strengths & weaknesses. Now, the problem is how will we identify that particular item is our strength or weakness. Its not at all problem, for example lets take GEOMETRY. By the name we have some idea about it. If still you are not able to identify, then go through the overview of GEOMETRY concepts in MATH/Quant Review of OG12. Its a bit annoying task, but we should identify those strengths and weaknesses. To chart down all those strengths and weaknesses, use the attached document.

Here, we are identified all our weaknesses to concentrate more on those areas.

After you identify all those areas, then take two prints and stick at your desk (or) in your study room near to you. I forgot to tell you, many forums suggests just decide your target date. I do not agree with this because its not wise idea finalizing a date without knowing the GMAT how it will test. We should have a target GMAT score rather than target date. In fact, we know that, "If you think BIG, then you will think BETTER."

SUMMARY:
1. Read 1st chapter of OG12.
2. Expect something BIG and set your target GMAT Score.
3. Chart down all strengths and weaknesses.
4. Over all idea of GMAT Syllabus.

And then plan everyday before sleeping, at what time tomorrow I can get time for preparation, once decided then stick to the time. This is the primary skill of a LEADERSHIP.

Then See you tomorrow,

Thanks,
Rajesh

Hello Gentlemen,

How are you? I hope you like previous post. OK. Lets start about my second day of preparation. From first day, I have got an idea of GMAT overview and its syllabus. And i have come to know all my strengths and weaknesses. So, yesterday I was planning how I will be going to improvise my skills to convert my weaknesses into strengths. And do not loose touch with your Strengths as well.

"If you have two tasks in your hand. One is difficult and other is easy. Then first go and do the difficult one in such a way you can bombard fear with in you."

I think this makes life easier than ever before if you follow the above saying. So, I have found my weakness as VERBAL part. If you get into the details of Verbal section, then you have SC, CR & RC. The very common one among all these is ENGLISH. As ENGLISH is not my native language, I must concentrate/learn/practice a par on this. Hence, I have decided to proceed with the ENGLISH GRAMMAR first. Its not the high standard English grammar that GMAT tests us. It checks only the very basics of GRAMMAR. So, I have bought a book, where you can find it at any local book shop near you i.e., ESSENTIAL GRAMMAR BOOK by CAMBRIDGE. It consists of total 114 chapters. Each chapter has the exercise to practice. And the special thing about this book is that it illustrates each GRAMMAR Challenge with figures. This helps us to imagine how words will get change based on situation. Yeah its correct, may be words which we knew are very less, but its not the vocabulary that important, its important how efficiently you use known words.

Break your mind theme that I am from rural background & its very hard for me to pace with English. There is nothing like that. As I already mentioned above, GMAT will not test vocabulary but it will test how efficient we are, in using words which are known.

I am going to finish all these chapters at least by tomorrow, even if I spend 5-6 hours per day.

"DO NOT undermine yourself, everybody has some quality which others do not have."

And

"There's LESS time LEFT, but ALOT to DO."

So, see you all again tomorrow, with this signing off .....

Rajesh
