Hi all,

NYU is my top choice. I am interested in schools with a good entrepreunership and IB programs. But unfortunately GMAT (600) did not go according to plan. Guess I choked during the big test!
Anyways, will be happy to hear from other applicants about their experience and how they tackled NYU's very unique essay #2 and #3?
What do you think my chances are if I apply in the final round? (march 15th) given that I raise my gmat score to around 680-700 range?

cheers!

Am no expert .. but I believe 600 is well below the average for NYU .. and with the current flood of applicants .. it might pose even more of a hurdle.

IMO it's best to forget R3 and apply for R1 next year, even with the 680-700 GMAT unless your application is stellar. Sure it means a loss of one year - but in that time you can probably bolster your application more. Probably think of a new venture since you are interested in Entrepreneurship.

Good luck getting into NYU

670, should i retake? part-time mba applicant

by bobular » Sat Jan 24, 2009 11:14 pm
Hi, I've posted this on the other boards, but not 1 reply, so I hope I can get some advice here

i got 670 48q 34v today.

i work as a librarian for a year now, and possibly being promoted to supervisor soon. (pending review) I serve on various committees that directly impact the library policies. (the library is one of the largest in the country by size, population it serves, number of branches, and budget)

my undergrad gpa sucked, but it got better and better, eventually in the mid and high 3s for the last 2 years with a math and a physics degree. (it was in the 1.8, 1.9 range my first 2 years) my masters degree in library science i had a 3.75 gpa.

I was wondering if I should retake to try to get a 700 or you think I outta be ok getting into stern's part time program? Although I gotta say, I normally get 44q 35v around 650 on my practices. I've never gotten as high as 48 on quant, but I've gotten 34 on verbal here and there in my practice.

p.s. it's either NYU or not doing this mba thing at all for me.

Hi all! I'm applying this fall for 2011 admit and NYU Stern is my top choice. Stern appeals to me for many reasons, not the least of which is because I'm already an NYU alum. Their excellent marketing program and concentration on luxury retail is exactly what I'm looking for, and with their Doing Business In program in Milan...well, Stern is my dream. Interviews with admin director and students mention that e-commerce is woven throughout the marketing courses. The profs, the program, the location - it's all perfect.

33 - Yes, I'm old!
Female
B.A. Communications - U of Pittsburgh - 3.69 GPA, Magna Cum Laude
--Lots of undergrad volunteer and honors orgs including Mortar Board, Golden Key
M.A. Journalism - NYU - not sure of GPA but I know it's at least 3.5

9 years experience in communications/marketing with a specialization in web/e-commerce/paid search for nonprofit, health care and financial industry
No background in business/finance so I've signed up for courses in accounting and stats this summer at a local comm. college (hopefully this will help if I can't score high on the quant portion of the GMAT - though I'll retake multiple times just in case)

GMAT not yet taken, though I'm signed up for a Veritas Prep classroom course in March-April
--Really worried about quant! Practice tests have me scoring higher than 80% in verbal and I'm sure I'll kill the AWA

Signed up for volunteer orientation at local animal shelters, unfortunately not starting until early March. Animals are my passion - I'm a long-time financial supporter of ASPCA, fervent online advocate, and am owned by a gaggle of shelter animals :)

Is anyone else attending the World MBA Tour @ the Manhattan Hilton on Feb. 28? I'm considering going to speak with Stern and Bocconi admissions reps.

gkammaje - your chances of being admitted R3 are slim... but if you really want to go to that school and are going to apply R3 make sure that you REALLY illustrate FIT. they are HUGE on that! 600 is well below the average by about 100 points, but it's not to say that it's not doable! Have you thought about PT or is that not an option? If you can take the next year and really bolster your application like pbanavara suggested that would be your best bet.

bobular - a 670 for NYU PT puts you in the right range for the Langone program. I know two people who both got in with 640's. I'm not saying that's the only part of the application, but if your score is what's holding you back I think you should try. Congrats on the 670 BTW

ecz.ozgeuyanik - "-Want to have marketing / Product management / Healthcare Management MBA." in order to be admitted you really have to hone in on the short term/long term goals. They're going to want to see that you've really done your homework on Stern, especially since you were a Pharmacy student in undergrad. Why business school? Why now? I can draw some conclusions between the marketing/product management/healthcare aspect... you'd just need to bring that out in the application.

avaluxe - I will be attending that MBA Tour event!

I attended the Kaplan application info session last week and NYU was one of the participants. If you'd like to get into the mind of a committee member check out the thread here: https://www.beatthegmat.com/insead-nyu-c ... 51707.html The responses to the 4 words that describe your program are key!

For everyone... I've pretty much exhausted my NYU Stern research, which is why I feel I can make these comments.
My goal is to make MBA applicants take onus over their process.

Hello all,

I didn't see this NYU thread until now. I just wanted to provide an update saying that I have been placed on the R2 waitlist without interview. I would love to get off the waitlist and get into NYU. NYU fits in the category of "show me you love me" type of school.

Do you have any advice and tips on how to get off the waitlist? I have already provided updates regarding my recent promotion and recent community service activities. I am not sure what else I can do at this point. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Might as well throw my name on the list too.

I'm a round 2 applicant, so I'll be hearing by April 1. I have not been contacted for an interview yet, so I'm assuming that I'm going to be rejected. I figure I would have been asked to interview at this point if I actually had a shot.

My profile:
GMAT: 710
3 years work experience to finance at a publishing company
Amazing recommendations, however this was the one school I applied to that I did not like my essays for.

We'll see what happens though. I will keep you guys updated.

I got dinged!

However i got into USC, which was what I was really hoping for (I want to be on the West coast). So I'm pretty happy overall. At this point I'm just waiting to hear from UCLA.
