Actually, if you were waitlisted at multiple top schools, it signifies that you're doing a lot that's right - first, that you have the core qualifications and then some, and also that you've managed to interest the schools in your application. Keep in mind that changing careers and shifting into finance is probably the hardest transition you can "sell" although your background prepares you better than some others.

I can't tell without having seen your applications, but most likely a key factor that resulted in the waitlists and no acceptances is presentation. While you interested the adcoms as I noted above, you didn't totally win them over in your applications. So I'd suggest first taking a critical look at your applications. They clearly were strong, but how could they have been better, how could you have made yourself stand out and "shine" even more? Could you have discussed more preparation for your goals? Other things?

Your job situation, which you implied you described in your applications, could be a slight weakness but I don't think it would account for lack of acceptance at all schools - though again I'd have to see your applications. Also, how supportive were your recommendations? When you are not currently employed, your recs from previous managers carry more weight.

Yes, you do have a shot at top schools next year - but if you plan to reapply, be aware that you must show growth. Also, use this time to critique your application and see how you can improve your presentation.
