I AGREE ,....answer should be D ...what is the source of the question though ?

we are only asked to find one possible solution ....from the equation there are two

x = -a or x = b

if we can find either one of them then we are done

1) gives us value of a ...so gives us one possible solution so its sufficient

2) similarly gives us one possible solution so sufficient

if a's value is given in statement 1 , we can solve for the first part of the quadratic i.e. (x + a)

But what about the second half ? i.e., (x-b) ?

isn't (x+a)(x-B) a complete quadratic eqn whose answer would depend on a AND b?

a quadratic has 2 solutions.. we are asked to find any 1 solution.. so if we know a or b we get one solution.. hence both statements individually answers..
