commutative operation

by kaulnikhil » Tue Mar 16, 2010 2:11 am
Although the first use of a commutative operation, a calculation in which the order of terms does not matter, to be conceptualized was recorded in 300 BC by Euclid in his book Elements, it had not been formally named until 1814 by Francois Joseph Servois.

(A) Although the first use of a commutative operation, a calculation in which the order of terms does not matter, to be conceptualized was recorded in 300 BC by Euclid in his book Elements, it had not been formally named until 1814 by Francois Joseph Servois
(B) Although not formally named until 1814 by Francois Joseph Servois, in the book Elements in 300 BC Euclid recorded the first use of a commutative operation, a calculation in which the order of terms does not matter, to be conceptualized
(C) Although recorded by Euclid in 300 BC in his book Elements, the conceptualization of the first used commutative operation, a calculation in which the order of terms does not matter, had not been formally named until 1814 by Francois Joseph Servois
(D) The first use of a commutative operation, or calculation in which the order of terms does not matter, to be conceptualized was recorded in 300 BC by Euclid in his book Elements, but the commutative property was not formally named until 1814 by Francois Joseph Servois
(E) The first use of a commutative operation, or calculation in which the order of terms does not matter, was not formally named until 1814 by Francois Joseph Servois, while it was recorded in 300 BC by Euclid in his book Elements

IMO A
(A) Although the first use of a commutative operation, a calculation in which the order of terms does not matter, to be conceptualized was recorded in 300 BC by Euclid in his book Elements, it had not been formally named until 1814 by Francois Joseph Servois

(C) Although recorded by Euclid in 300 BC in his book Elements, the conceptualization of the first used commutative operation, a calculation in which the order of terms does not matter, had not been formally named until 1814 by Francois Joseph Servois
It (C) it appears that the conceptualization was of the first used operation while in (A) the first use of operation was conceptualized.

A] 'it' at worst technically refers to 'the use' and at best is ambiguous; morevover i do not think the past perfect is apt, because the 'recording' event happened prior to the 'naming event'
B] Awkward modifier placement.
C] Implies that 'the conceptualization' was recorded by Euclid, while the original sentence implies that 'the use' was recorded.
E] Implies that 'the first use' rather than the operation itself was formally named by FJS.

Choose D. What's the OA?

OA D

The first use of commutative operation.............. to be conceptualized was recorded in 300 BC by Euclid in his book Elements, but the commutative property was not formally named until 1814 by Francois Joseph Servois

THe boldface doesnt sound correct when read together

OA cannot be D.

Correct answer should be C.

C has a maodifier error.
Although recorded by Euclid needs to modify commutative operation. not conceptualization.
The commutative operation was recorded in the book and not the conceptualization of the first used operation.

In D operation or calculation does not distort coz, the name was not yet established then. only after 1814 was it called commutative operation. This answer choice has the presence of resumptive modifier- 'the commutative property was not formally named until1814..." and this clears out the error in A. 'it' does not specify what it is reffering to. by adding the word commutative property the choice D clearly spells out what was not named until 1814.

My choice is D

Its clearly "D"... "or" doesnt change the meaning..

"C" is wrong

Although recorded by Euclid in 300 BC in his book Elements, the conceptualization of the first used commutative operation, a calculation in which the order of terms does not matter, had not been formally named until 1814 by Francois Joseph Servois
The conceptualization of ......., had not been formally named.

The thing recorded was commutative property and not conceptualisation

The thing named and recorded was commutative property as clearly stated by D
