Low GMAT in a pinch for application advise

by BrainFart » Thu Mar 04, 2010 9:40 am
Please help! I'm appying to a top MBA program, but I have to make a decision ASAP if I should hold off and resubmit in the final stage. I apologize for the venting session below, but I'm feelling pretty pinched...

I was finalizing my app and getting ready to take the GMAT, when I got an email from Pearson Vue telling me that due to a flooding at the test center, my GMAT had to be rescheduled. I called customer service and was told the earliest I could get rescheduled was two days after my original appointment. I freaked and asked the rep to please reschedule me on the same day. I also asked to no avail why Pearson couldn't create additional slots for the same day at a different location. GMAT has been a big monster under my bed. This was my third retake, after oscilating between 500 and 550 (practice scores of 560 and 620). I thought the last six months of preparation was finally paying off, as I was able to up my confidence and bring my practice scores to the promising range of 680 and 700. I asked the rep to speak to a manager and was warned that the manager would not be able to do anything else for me. He was correct, but I tried anyways. I asked the manager the same thing, and she basically said that she didn't create the weather or the flooding and there was nothing she could do. I was miffed at her tone and said that I wasn't trying to make her GOD, but that in a way she (read: the system / institution) was messing with my future here...I thought about all the forums and articles that say how half the battle is all about the mental, emotional, and psychological preparation. I was prepared, or at least I thought I was, until they messed with my date!! Why did it have to flood?!

I contacted the school and was kindly advised to go ahead with my online app and email the admissions office with my offical score as soon as I have completed the test. Walked into the test feeling good - not overly confident, but I was definitely not as frigthened as I had been. Walked out with a 520 and a splitting headache.

I emailed the school and asked if I could resubmit another score in about 30 days, when I think is the next time I can take the test again. I was advised to either move forward with my score or resubmit the entire app in the final stage. I think I have a solid app package, but I wanted it to be more competitive with a better GMAT score. If I resubmit in the final stage, I basically forego my chances for a scholarship, which could cover up to 50% of the $100K cost. What do I do? Can I honestly get into a top 10 MBA with a 550 (my second test score)? Do I just eat the cost and go for the final stage?

hi BrainFart ;-) ,

I think the outlook for a top 10 program w/ a 550 is very slim unless there is something in your application that trumps everyone else that is applying. If you're applying this late, I assume it's for R3 which is tough as it is, ESPECIALLY for a top 10 program. if you're adamant about applying this round, maybe you should just go ahead and see what happens and then apply again next year. At the very least, next year you could say that you brought up your GMAT score.
My goal is to make MBA applicants take onus over their process.

BrainFart,

I hate to pile on, but I think you'd be waisting your time/money if you apply before you get that GMAT score up.

Good Luck! J

Thanks, jon82 and money9111! I was already leaning towards getting my score up first before I move forward with my app, and your feedback gave me that extra push. Financing is a concern, but my priority is to get in. I am also considering two other programs and I would actually be applying in their first round. Back to my notes...I hope you don't mind if I reach out to you directly at some point within the next couple of months...Thanks again!
