Artificial Intelligence

by bigmonkey31 » Wed Feb 24, 2010 6:17 pm
Proponents of artificial intelligence say they will be able to make computers that can understand English and other human languages, recognize objects, and reason as an expert does--computers that will be used to diagnose equipment breakdowns, deciding whether to authorize a loan, or other purposes such as these.

a) (same)

b) as an expert does, which may be used for purposes such as diagnosing equipment breakdowns or deciding whether to authorize a loan

c) like an expert--computers that will be used for such purposes as diagnosing equipment breakdowns or deciding whether to authorize a loan

d) like an expert, the use of which would be for purposes like the diagnosis of equipment breakdowns or the decision whether or not a loan should be authorized

e) like an expert, to be used to diagnose equipment breakdowns, deciding whether to authorize a loan or not, or the like

One does a yeomans' work to give us the thread of previous threads.

This is another of those As v/s like sentences quite common.

I feels C scores over D and E as it mentions computers immediately after 'like an expert' to leave no ambiguity.

A is wrong for Parallel issue .... of course ...

BUT In C option too, IT IS QUITE WRONG TO USE LIKE HERE.

AS suited BEST here.

In this sentence, verbs (understand , recognize and reason) are being compared NOT NOUN

wud love to see comments from Ron , Stacy....

Hi Girish,

There is nothing wrong with the usage of like here. In Manhattan SC book there is an example which helps us understand this:

I danced like a clown.
I danced as a clown.

The first example means that my dancing resembled that of a clown. The second example says that I danced literally as a clown. So they have 2 different meanings.

In this example,

Computers reason like an expert - Correct. Their reasoning resembles that of an expert
Computers reason as an expert - Wrong. Computers cannot become an expert (whoever he/she may be!) and then reason.

Hope my explaination is clear enough.

hi Girirsh,

The use of "like" in option C is correct. There is no verb involved here. And as mentioned in Manhattan.. "like" is being used with a noun

I guess D fails to address the fact that the examples should be introduced "such.... as " , while D uses like.
