Average cost of 5 pens and 4 pencils is Rs. 36. The average cost of 7 pens and 8 pencils is Rs. 48. Find the total cost of 24 pens and 24 pencils.

A. 324
B. 720
C. 1000
D. 1044
E. 2088

The OA is E.

Total cost of 5 pens and 4 pencils=36x9=324
Total cost of 7 pens and 8 pencils=48x15=720


Total cost of 12 pens and 12 pencils=1044
So total cost of 24 pens and 24 pencils = 2088

x= pens and y = pencil
5x+4y=36x9 =324
7x+8y=48x15= 720
add both 12x+12y = 1044 --> 24x+24 y = 1044x2 = 2088 Ans E...i think this is the shortest....

Good vijay_venky and shashank.ism,
You guys solved it by the shortcut technique.When I solved the question for the 1st time,I solved both the equations and got the value of x and y.
Then,I had put those values in the equation:-24(x + y)
Solving by this method took a lot of time.
This question is a perfect example as to how in quant you can save time by adopting shortcut approach.
Thats why I ad specially mentioned to solve the question via the shorter method.
