gmat scores

by cmandan » Fri Sep 28, 2007 7:15 am
Hello,

When I get 45 out of 60 in verbal, does that mean I have gotten 15 answers wrong? Is 45 a raw score or converted score? Can you shed some light on gmat scoring?

thanks

Section scores are on a scale of 0 to 60, and are based on the difficulty level of the questions you answered as well as how many you got right.

Short version: it's complicated, and a 45 is really just shorthand for a certain percentile. It's a fools errand to spend too much time trying to figure out what the scores mean; the main benefit of having the score is using it as a point of reference.

Yep - they don't publish the scale they use to convert your performance to that two-digit score. Nobody knows. But, in general, you will get about half of the questions right and about half of the questions wrong, regardless of your score - this test is not scored in the same way that we're used to tests being scored.
