Little confused but I would go with A. I think the problem is testing Tenses here. Usage of Past perfect tense is fine here as some sort of on going relevance is present b/w time frames of age and getting depressed.

I wanted to chose D initially coz I feel after the first comma sentence should quickly focus on to main subject talk i.e. major depression.

Pls post OA soon and expln if possible ?
