Kaplan question - Democratic Republic

by singhag » Tue Jan 19, 2010 5:57 pm
The Democratic republic of Congo not only has one of the world's largest populations, with over 56 million people, but also has one of the world's fastest growing populations, with an annual growth rate of 3.5 percent.

A) not only has one of the world's largest populations, with over 56 million people, but also has
B) not only has one of the world's largest populations, with over 56 million people, it also has
C) not only has one of the world's largest populations, with over 56 million people, but moreover it is
D) with over 56 million people, making it one of the world's most populous counteries, but also has
E) has one of the world's largest populations, with over 56 million people, but also has

I understand the answer. Kindly somebody explain me why in option D use of participle "making" create a sentence fragment.
Also where we can use "with" as a modifier and does "with" always modify the immediate noun.

In the following question a modifier with "with" is considered awkward

Museum goers who glanced up into the building's five story atrium often noticed that birds, with the behavior that was being studied by the museum staff's, were nesting in the rafters

I think the answer is A.. other options have either wrong idiom or wrong grammar

Hi singhag,

To rephrase your question--you don't think D is correct, but rather want clarification on why D is wrong?

Remember, modifying phrases set off by commas provide unnecessary information. In other words, if there is a phrase set of by commas, the sentence must be grammatical and logical if that information is removed.

In D, the modifying phrase set of by commas is "Making it one of the world's most populous countries." We know it is a modifier because of its use of the gerund here, rather than a conventional verb. So lets write out the resulting sentence with that phrase removed:

The Democratic Republic of Congo with over 56 million people, but also has one of the worlds fastest growing populations, with an annual growth rate of 3.5 percent

As you can see, this is a sentence fragment. The first half of the sentence should be a complete clause, but has no verb.

Hi itsratul,

Yes, A) seems to be; of the remaining four answers it is the only one that correctly completes the 'not only...but also' idiom.

Hi Eli,

Thank you for the explanation it clarifies my doubt. Can you please also throw some light on the usage of "with" in the modifier?

Regards

With is fine here; in this case, with idiomatically means 'consisting of' or 'containing.'
