Set 34 #4

by KL08 » Thu Sep 20, 2007 7:38 pm
4. Drum X is 1/2 full of oil and drum Y, which has twice the capacity of drum X, is 2/J full of oil. If all of the oil in drum X is poured into drum Y. then drum Y will be filled to what fraction of its capacity ?

(A) 3/4
(B) 5/6
(C) 11/12
(D) 7/6
(E) 11/6

OA is C, but I can't figure it out. Is the 2/J a typo?
Thanks.

It is probably a typo.

going by OA answer C.

since drum 2 is twice as big. 1/2 the oil in drum 1 would be 1/4 the oil in drum 2

so

back calculating

11/12 - 1/4 = 2/3. j must be a typo for 3.

I think.

This question is from OG11, and yes 2/J should be 2/3.
